Shaun Martin passed away on August 3, 2024. He was an American multi-instrumentalist, record producer, arranger, and songwriter. Martin served as the music director for gospel musician Kirk Franklin, was a member of the jazz fusion group Snarky Puppy, and was once the music minister of Dallas’ Friendship-West Baptist Church. Martin received three Grammys as a member of Snarky Puppy and four for his work with Franklin.

Early Life

Shaun Martin was born on August 23, 1978 in Dallas, Texas, US. At four, his mother enrolled him in piano lessons where he learned jazz and classical pieces. He also picked up gospel music from his church. Before enrolling at Weatherford College and the University of North Texas, he attended Dallas’ Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

Career

In his final year of high school, Martin started working with Kirk Franklin, the Gospel choir director. From North Texas, he graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences. While still a student at North Texas, he worked in the recording and production of Erykah Badu’s critically acclaimed album Mama’s Gun.

In 2010, following many partnerships with Kirk Franklin, Shaun Martin joined Snarky Puppy. Michael League, a music composer, founded the group in the beginning, and over their career, they released 15 hit albums. Empire Central, the group’s final project, was released in 2022.

In the end, he embarked on a solo career and released two albums: Focus and 7 Summers. In an interview with Forbes in 2016, he discussed the success of 7 Summers, stating that by the time the project was published in 2015, he already had a “built-in audience.”

Martin even received some recognition, winning many Grammy Awards from 2007 to 2023.

However, he experienced a stroke in April 2023 and was admitted to the hospital. In a video that gospel artist Kirk Franklin shared on his Instagram page that month, he referred to Shaun as “one of the greatest musicians in the world” and asked for everyone to pray for him.

On September 14, 2024, Snarky Puppy organized a Shaun memorial concert alongside musicians including Erykah Badu and Norah Jones while he was under medical monitoring. The Black Academy of Arts and Letters in Downtown Dallas was to host the concerts.

However, Friendship-West pastor Dr. Frederick Douglas Haynes was chosen to host the performance, and it was expected that individuals who had worked with Martin throughout the years would be present. Names like Bobby Sparks and Adam Blackstone were on the list.

On August 1, Shaun Martin’s Instagram page published an official notice about the performance, which will be called From the Friends of Shaun Martin.

What was the cause of Shaun Martin’s Death?

Shaun died on August 3, 2024, at the age of 45. His actual cause of death has not been revealed. A day after his death, Snarky Puppy honored the artist on Instagram with a picture. Several well-known musicians, such as Jason St. Clair, also shared their grief.

They wrote:

“Yesterday, we lost a music legend and, more importantly, a beautiful, luminous human being. Shaun Martin touched so many people during his life and through the beautiful immortality of music, will continue to do so. There’s so much that can be said but words can’t do justice. Rest in peace.”
